This checklist includes all species for which acceptable specimen, photographic or written documentation exists for New York State.  The list has been approved by the Association's New York State Avian Records Committee (NYSARC) and includes 514 species representing 24 orders and 69 families of birds.  The names of the birds and their taxonomic arrangement follow the American Ornithological Society's (AOS) Check-list of North American Birds, Seventh Edition, 1998, and subsequent supplements published in The Auk through July 2024 (42nd through 65th Supplements).

A Outside of the Adirondacks.
P Outside of the pelagic zone but within New York State. The pelagic zone begins 3 [statute] miles from shore and extends to the 200 nautical mile mark, with state boundary lines calculated using the NPoL/CPoL (Nearest/Closest Point of Land) method. For clarity, no portion of the Long Island Sound is considered to be within the Pelagic Zone.
S Anywhere in New York State in spring. “D” or “U” following “S” indicates downstate or upstate the rest of the year as well.

NYS Checklist Changes per AOS 65th Supplement (2024)  7/23/24

Passenger Pigeon moved to follow Rock Pigeon.

2 Plover shuffle: Northern Lapwing moved to follow Piping Plover.
3 New genus for some plovers: Wilson's (Anarhynchus wilsonia) and Snowy (A. nivosus)
4 Cory's Shearwater split. The more common one off the Atlantic coast is still called Cory's but has a new species name (Calonectris borealis). The less common Scopoli's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) also occurs off the coast of NYS, so both species are on the state checklist.
5 Audubon's Shearwater split into 5 species. The only one known to occur in North America is Sargasso Shearwater, which retains the scientific name Puffinus lherminieri.
6 Herons re-sequenced.
7 Night-Herons are now Night Herons:  Black-crowned Night Heron, Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
8 Least Bittern (Botaurus exilis) moved into same genus as American Bittern.
9 Cattle Egret split and moved to genus Ardea. Ours is now Western Cattle-Egret (Ardea ibis).
10 Barn Owl split into 3 species. Ours is American Barn Owl with a new species name (Tyto furcata).
11 House Wren split into 7 species. Ours is Northern House Wren and remains Troglodytes aedon.
12 All 3 redpoll species lumped into one species called Redpoll (Acanthis flammea).
